The journey has been extended, but Tomer and Lettie are ready to find balance. Through well-thought, vivid storytelling, Jackie Walker brings the conclusion of Tomer’s and Lettie’s story the redemption they deserve. Falling firmly in the romantic suspense genre, both characters have dealt with a growing relationship built on lies, tied with a revenge plot that causes Lettie to be kidnapped earlier in the trilogy. With both characters dealing with deep-seated childhood trauma, the continued healing of Lettie’s trauma from her kidnapping, their neurodiverse points-of-view, and the continued work to bring down her kidnappers, the only way forward is through. Through the trauma. Through the uniqueness of each of their minds. Through the communication. Through their love. Through their chosen and found family.
The entire Redleg family rallies to prove that it isn’t a weakness to seek help. That it isn’t a weakness to feel. It isn’t a weakness to love and be loved.
Jackie’s writing strength shines in her character development and ability to weave multiple stories through an arching suspense plot. I don’t know how she keeps everything straight, but waiting for each new novel is hard. Her research into neurodivergent minds has created some of the most compelling characters. Lettie’s ADHD and her inner monologue bring about an understanding of how a person with ADHD views the world, which has made me look at my own life and the lives of my children and students in a completely new way. The same is valid for her characters on the autism spectrum. The way her neurotypical characters learn to show their love and support is awe-inspiring, from providing tangible evidence of their passion to acknowledging their failures to recognize Tomer’s reaction to their actions and apologizing. It just makes my heart swell.I truly don’t want to write about the plot of Unexpected Redemption. I don’t think I can do that without dropping spoilers. Just go forth and read!
